Industry growth is a "chicken and egg" situation. Is industry due to the fact that the people in these areas are young, aggressive thinking, entrepreneurial people; or is the industry itself a driver of research and development process technology? Which is the chicken and which is the egg is uncertain at this time, and probably will remain so. The main areas of interest in these times are software, biotechnology, medical in all aspects (instruments, health care, technology), and communications. Through the utilization of portfolio philosophy, more mundane groups (such as machine tools, housing and the like), greater imagination and concern must be applied to make the payoff occur in the process of R&D.
